NSW: Women protest new nuclear reactor

A local councillor says women are especially concerned about the dangers of Sydney'snew nuclear reactor because they'll give birth to the next generation of Australians.

Sutherland Shire councillor GENEVIEVE RANKIN says about 70 women have demonstratedoutside the current research reactor at Lucas Heights in Sydney's south west.

The federal government last week confirmed approval to build a $300 million replacementnuclear facility on the site, despite opposition from the local community.

Ms RANKIN says the women's protest group heard from female lobby groups and a SouthAustralian Aboriginal group which fears its community will be home to a new radioactivewaste dump when Lucas Heights is upgraded.

She says there's a strong feeling among women about the problems caused by nuclearwaste, concerning genetic defects that are passed on to the next generation.

Ms RANKIN says women have a special interest in the next generation because they bear the babies.
