WA: Three escape from Port Hedland detention centre

PERTH, April 10 AAP - Three detainees escaped from the Port Hedland Detention Centre
in Western Australia's north-west early today.

A spokesman from the Department of Immigration and Multicultural Affairs (DIMA) said
he could not confirm that the men, of Middle Eastern origin, had cut their way through
a fence about 5am (WST).

"The details of the escape are being investigated by centre management," the DIMA spokesman said.

"There have been reports that they cut holes in fences ... but we are not confirming
or otherwise, we are investigating it."

Port Hedland police as well as centre management are searching for the detainees.

"We've notified all transport lines, truck lines and rail, that type of thing," the
spokesman said.
