Qld: Police face court over the right to strike

BRISBANE, Aug 16 AAP - The Queensland Police Union (QPU) today will ask the SupremeCourt to tell it how far it can go with industrial action to back its call for pay rises.

The QPU wants an 18 per cent pay rise over three years for its 8,000 members, but thegovernment has offered 3.5 per cent per annum.

The union has threatened industrial action to back its campaign but faces the hurdleof legislation which outlawed police strikes.

Last weekend, the QPU launched a $1 million media campaign over wages, touting thepossibility of paperwork bans and threatening not to issue traffic and speeding tickets.

Talks with the government have failed to reach any agreement on the wage claims.

The union has ruled out a full-scale strike but today will ask the Supreme Court inBrisbane to determine just how far it can take industrial action under the legislation.

The QPU has claimed Queensland police are the lowest paid in mainland Australia, butthe government says it could not afford bigger pay rises without increasing taxes.
